Definitions

Cookies are short pieces of text (letters and / or numbers) that allow the Web server to store on the Client (the browser) information to be used during the same visit to the site (session cookies) or later, even after days (persistent cookies).

Cookies are stored, based on user preferences, by the individual browser on the specific device used (computer, tablet, smartphone). Similar technologies, such as, for example, web beacon, transparent GIF and all forms of local storage introduced with HTML5, can be used to gather information on user behavior and use of services.

In the following of this document we shall refer to cookies and all similar technologies by simply using the word “cookie”.

The types of cookies used

Necessary cookies

The necessary cookies help contribute to making a website usable by enabling basic functions such as page navigation and access to protected areas of the site. The website cannot function properly without these cookies.

Preference cookies Preference cookies allow a website to remember information that affects the way the site works or looks, such as the preferred language or the region you are in.

Statistical cookies Statistical cookies help website owners to understand how visitors interact with the sites by collecting and transmitting information anonymously.

Marketing Cookies Marketing cookies are used to monitor visitors on websites. The intent is to display pertinent and engaging advertisements for the individual user and therefore those of greater value for third-party publishers and advertisers.

Third-party cookies Visiting a website, you may receive cookies both from the visited site (“owners”) and from sites managed by other organizations (“third parties”). A notable example is given by the presence of “social plugins” for Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn. These are parts of the visited page directly generated by the aforementioned sites and integrated into the page of the host site.

The most common use of social plugins is aimed to sharing contents on social networks. The presence of these plugins implies the transmission of cookies to and from all sites managed by third parties. The management of the information collected by “third parties” is ruled by the relative information, to which it is asked to refer to.

To ensure greater transparency and convenience, the web addresses of the various information and cookie management methods are given below.

This site does not use (and does not allow third parties to use) the analysis tool of Google to monitor or collect personal identification information. Google does not associate the IP address to any other data held by Google nor attempts to link an IP address to a user’s identity.

Google may also communicate this information to third parties where required by law or in case such third parties process this information on Google’s behalf. For more information, please refer to the following  given link: https://www.google.it/policies/privacy/partners/

Duration of cookies Some cookies (session cookies) remain active only until the browser is closed or the logout command is executed. Other cookies “survive” after the browser is closed and are available also for next visits by the user. These cookies are called persistent and their duration is set by the server at the time of their creation. In some cases a deadline is set, in other cases the duration is unlimited. However, by browsing the pages of this site, it is possible to interact with sites managed by third parties that can create or modify permanent and profiling cookies.

Management of cookies The user can decide whether to accept cookies using the settings on the owned browser. Attention: the total or partial disabling of technical cookies can compromise the use of the site functionality reserved to registered users. On the contrary, the usability of public contents is possible also by completely disabling cookies.

Disabling “third party” cookies does not affect browsing in any way. The setting can be defined specifically for the different sites and web applications. Furthermore, the best browsers allow to define different settings for “owners” and “third-party” cookies.

As an example, in Firefox, through the menu Tools-> Options -> Privacy, it is possible to access to a control panel where it is possible to define whether to accept the different types of cookies and proceed with their removal.
